I said yesterday that I had bought a car and here it is. Much more to come on my new motor carriage as I get some seat time. As of now, I like it. A lot.

Is that the 1.8T or the 2.0T? Either way these things are so fun on boost.
There are a ton of hop-up parts/chips/options on these too
You’ve got a lot of joy coming at you. ENJOY!

Nice! You have pretty much the generation that brought back greatness to the GTI.

Congratulations! I have owned my ‘06 GTI since ‘08. Same color even. I’ve loved mine, and it has been incredibly reliable with the right maintenance. Enjoy!

nice choice, now take it to your local tuner of choice and get some work done!
also, I strongly recommend H&R lowering springs for your VW. they made a world of difference in mine!

Congrats!

That is such a fun car! They’re also so easy to work on too.

Couple pointers:

If you have the BPY engine, then the fuel pump tappet and camshaft are mismatched metals, so the tappet will eat itself pretty quickly. VW issued an extended warranty for it: 10 years, 120,000 miles. You can check it yourself really easily. If it is worn just put it back and take it to the dealer to have them warranty it. They need to call but they should replace the camshaft, fuel pump, and tappet.

Also, I recommend adding the pendulum mount insert , which prevents the bushing from getting worn or breaking. Replacing it is essentially impossible, so I just recommend the insert. I put it in my friends car and I noticed no increased vibrations at all. And the benefit is it makes the shifting even better, and the acceleration that much better also; no wheel hop. I dumped the clutch, and the tires just hooked up and I was off. It is so much fun!!!

Also, replace the timing belt often, like every 50k miles. It’s super easy to do and it’s a good thing to do because VW timing belts used to be unpredictable. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Other than that check out this video .

Thanks for the advice! My dad has an A3 with this engine so we are accustomed to the timing belt changes and the stupid cam issue. I’ll definitely look into the pendulum mount insert!

Like it too. My favorite shop had a Jetta in of that vintage and he was changing out the front door harness. The insulation fails at the flex point. He said both passenger and driver. Have you guys seen that?

I don’t track my VW products, was this a Mexico built one or where?

Oh and the other important thing to watch out for that I’m sure you’re aware of is the carbon buildup. Find a shop that uses BG products and see if they can do a BG induction service. I charge about 175 for it, and anything over that is pretty ridiculous.

Besides the intake cleaning, a good way to prevent an issue is drive the car as it's meant to be driven. Once the car is up to temperature, flog it! If the engine is constantly being bogged down and never taken to redline and always going slow, the injectors get clogged and the valves will get caked up. And you can ruin the intake runner flaps too.

I think all Mkv GTIs are German production. The MkV Jetta was made in Mexico. If the vin begins with W it was German made and if it begins with 3 it is from Mexico.

Lol, yep! You have to do the same thing to Porsche’s with the IMS bearing. You get the coolant and oil nice and warm, and then flog the shit out of it. Aka, drive it like a Porsche is meant to be driven.

And I forgot, there is a DIY option for the intake cleaning. Liqui Moly sells a can that you can use yourself . They make a diesel version too which I use for my MKVI. It works really well and is a much cheaper alternative to paying a shop for a BG service. Unless your car has under 75,000 miles in which case doing BG services gives you a service warranty against certain failures.
